Westerns 1-9 Glen Emmets 1-9
Kevin Mullen Shield Group BRd3

Much like the Irish rugby team yesterday, the Emmets were also disappointed to leave with a draw from Reaghstown yesterday morning, yet they could also have been leaving with nothing.
There was a very strong wind gusting directly down the pitch which the away team had the benefit of in the first half. However, due to poor finishing, a lead of 3 points was all we had t...o our advantage at half time, with a scoreline of 0-6 to 0-3.
The Westerns were level within 10 minutes of the the restart scoring 4 points to the Emmets 1 and, despite us regaining the lead with another 2 points, the Westerns took advantage again with the first goal of the match following a mistake in the defence which allowed a long hopeful ball in to hop, which the Westerns full-forward despatched to the net.
The Westerns went two clear following a blundered quick kick out and all looked lost when Paul McGroarty failed to pass to Frankie Carolan, who after starting a move on his own full-back line, ran the length of the pitch and was all alone on the edge of the square but inexplicably "Donegal" McGroarty shot for a pint which clipped the outside of the upright and went wide. However the Emmets persevered and substitute David "Butts" Connolly lobbed the Western's keeper and the Emmets amazingly retook the lead with just a minute left.
There was still time for more drama though and from the kick-out, the Westerns won possession and stormed downfield for a deserved equaliser.
Much improvement needed for the next Sundays game, away to Dundalk Young Irelands at 11am.

Best for the Emmets were Paul McGroarty - despite the horrendous error of not passing for a match-winning goal, otherwise he had an otherwise respectable game, and Frankie Carolan - could be blamed for the goal though there was a push by the full-forward which the ref, bewilderingly, failed to notice, but apart from this the man was class!
